May News.
As the blossom trees burst into bloom, 'The Glamoury' reviews continue to flow in and if you've brought an early bird copy of June's Uncut you might have spotted the latest in a barrage of glowing responses to Emily's debut. Here's what they say:
Folk enchantress spins 12 eldritch fairytales
'A bewitching collection from one of the new British folk scene's most beguiling presences. Portman's concertina couples with strings, harp and guitar in seductive arrangements, while her deceptively innocent voice self-harmonises lyrics soaked in folk tales, myths and disturbing dreams (check "Little Longing", a lullaby to a sawdust baby). "Tongue-Tied", "Three Gold Hairs" and "Mossy Coat" draw magical energy from the streets and seascapes of her Newcastle hometown, while the strange dischords of "Stick Stock" are needle pricks against a malevolent stepmother.' **** Rob Young UNCUT.
Watch out for other forthcoming review's in Songlines, Acoustic Magazine, Living North, not to mention an article in The Journal's Culture magazine due for release on 25th May - and rumour has it Emily is on the cover!
Most Exciting of all this month sees the FURROW RECORDS LABEL LAUNCH! Yes, Furrow records is the new indie label on the block, started by Emily with her friends Christi Andropolis and David Newey in order to release exciting new music with folk roots - including their own. So If you are around on 17th May come and join them at The Sage Gateshead at 7.45pm for a triple-bill concert featuring Furrow's founding artists, for a night in celebration of DIY.
Emily will also be appearing at The Hexham Gathering on 27th and 29th May - see gig page for details.
Happy May!
